Ayana was born in Guyana and grew up in Barbados, eventually leaving to attend medical school in the UK. She trained in general and forensic psychiatry at The Maudsley Hospital, completed her PhD at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience (IoPPN) in London and was appointed as a Consultant Psychiatrist and Senior Lecturer. She has been a practising psychiatrist for over twenty years and has written and contributed to many academic papers and abstracts.

For the last six years, Ayana has specialised in the diagnosis and treatment of Adult Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), and is currently writing a book about the condition focussing on the experiences of Black women. Additionally, in the last few years, her own experience of peri-menopause and menopause has led to an interest in hormone health and a passion to improve access to evidence-based care, treatment and support for women transitioning through this phase.

Ayana collaborates with charities and professional bodies to raise awareness of the mental health needs of Black women. Now dividing her time between the UK and Barbados, Ayana is on a mission to improve mental health and wellbeing in the Caribbean and has recently founded the Caribbean Mind & Hormone Clinic (See Website).

She is also an Honorary Senior Lecturer (Learn more) at the University of Sussex in the UK and her current research interests relate to the impact of gender, culture and ethnicity on experiences of neurodiversity and menopause.
